Interview with Coach Joey of Wyoming
Jake (Saturday Night Chronicles): Coach Joey! Jake with Saturday Night Chronicles. Do you have some time to answer a few questions about the upcoming season?
Coach Joey: Absolutely.
Jake: In your first year on the job, what do you think your biggest challenge will be?
Coach Joey: We are going to make sure we are recruiting not only the best players but also the best players who fit Wyoming football. We are going to set the standard for GRIT.
Jake: You have continued to emphasize grit since your introductory presser. It’ll be exciting to see how that translates to the field. You must feel good coming into the season with an established quarterback and running back duo. Do you think that will give you an advantage going up against a competitive Mountain West Conference that is looking to make a bid for one of the 12-team playoff spots?
Coach Joey: It is always great to return starters and have experience on the offensive side of the ball. We are counting on Evan and Harrison to have a considerable impact on the field and in the locker room. They understand the culture and what Wyoming football is about. Also, don’t forget about our RS Senior fullback Caleb Driskill. You will hear that name a lot this season. As for the Mountain West and the playoffs, that will take care of itself. I’m preaching to these men to take it one game at a time. We are only worried about the next one.
Jake: Considering that offense was a struggle for the Cowboys throughout most of last season, scoring under 30 points in 7 games, how do you plan on adjusting to improve on the 9-4 finish last year?
Coach Joey: We played 13 games last year, and we rushed for 130 yards or more in 10 of those games. We went 9-1 when we rushed for more than 130 yards. The only loss? That school down in Austin that wishes they were real cowboys. I heard they had a “cocks not glocks” movement a few years ago. I’m not sure how you lose to a team that celebrates cocks and runs around with giant dildos in their hands, but we will turn the page. Anyway, this offense will go when we are able to run the ball. It’s that simple. It fits with the hard-nosed, gritty culture that we want to establish here. Run the ball.
Jake: Very insightful, and thank you for that candid response. The Cowboys were 7-0 at home last year with a big win against Big 12 opponent Texas Tech. What is the secret sauce when playing at War Memorial Stadium?
Coach Joey: We have a great home-field advantage. Some would say that it’s the best when it comes to the G5 schools; I say it’s the best in the country, period. Our fans have a huge impact on the home games and helped us secure that 7-0 record at home. It also didn’t hurt that we averaged 176 yards rushing in our home games. All of the Cowboys in the stadium love to see the ground game get going.
Jake: Love to see the confidence, Coach. Good luck against ASU in week 1.
