Ladies and gentlemen, the long-awaited college football season has kicked off with a bang, and Week 1 had all the makings of a classic! From nail-biting finishes to surprising upsets, the gridiron action was hotter than a firecracker on the Fourth of July. Let’s take a gander at some of the top games that had fans on the edge of their seats.
ECU vs. #10 NC State: In Raleigh, the NC State Wolfpack, ranked #10 in the nation, showed East Carolina no mercy. The Pirates put up a fight, but the Wolfpack’s offense was as unstoppable as a runaway train, cruising to a 45-21 victory. East Carolina will be licking their wounds as they prepare to host FCS Northwest next week.
#19 North Texas vs. Western Kentucky: Down in Denton, the Mean Green of North Texas, ranked #19, outgunned Western Kentucky, 45-21. Despite the win, senior quarterback General Booty threw three picks, leaving fans wondering if he can steer the ship right for the rest of the season. North Texas will have a tough test on the road against Washington State next week.
Nevada (1-0) at Penn State: The Nevada Wolf Pack rolled into Happy Valley with a 1-0 record but found the Penn State Nittany Lions to be anything but hospitable hosts. The Lions roared to a 59-31 victory, sending Nevada home with their tails between their legs. The Wolf Pack will have a chance to regroup during their bye week.
Utah State vs. UTEP: In a defensive slugfest, Utah State emerged victorious over UTEP, 20-10. The Aggies showed grit, holding the Miners to a measly 10 points and proving they’re not to be trifled with this season. Next week, they travel to Texas A&M for a showdown with the Aggies.
UNLV vs. FCS West: Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, the UNLV Rebels put on a performance for the ages, dismantling FCS West 93-21. Freshman phenom Santiago Melendez tossed the pigskin for 500 yards and nine touchdowns, adding another score on the ground. With a bye next week, the Rebels will have time to bask in their well-earned glory.
South Alabama vs. Southern Miss: Down south, the Jaguars of South Alabama pounced on Southern Miss, securing a commanding 51-10 victory. With a bye next week, they’ll rest up and strategize for their next challenge.
Arkansas State vs. FCS Southeast: Arkansas State found themselves in a shootout but emerged victorious over FCS Southeast, 63-38. Quarterback Jaylen Raynor threw eight touchdown passes but also surrendered five interceptions, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. Arkansas State faces a tall order as they travel to Arkansas next week.
Wyoming vs. Buffalo: The Wyoming Cowboys staged a remarkable comeback against Buffalo but fell short in the final minutes, losing 45-43. Down 17-0 at halftime, Wyoming made a gutsy quarterback switch, bringing in Evan Svoboda, who nearly led them to victory. Wyoming will seek redemption next week against Coastal Carolina.
Coastal Carolina vs. FCS East: Coastal Carolina crushed FCS East with a jaw-dropping 110-20 scoreline, but their triumph is under scrutiny as the NCAA investigates allegations of tampering. Quarterback Ethan Vasko led the charge with 609 yards and nine touchdowns, while running back Christian Washington added four more on the ground. Coastal will hope to clear their name as they prepare to host Wyoming next week.
#16 Tulane vs. #8 Utah: In a stunning upset, #16 Tulane toppled #8 Utah, 35-24. Quarterback Ty Thompson threw for 351 yards and four touchdowns, while Mario Williams racked up 251 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Tulane’s revamped offense shone bright, even with their Heisman Trophy winner, Makhi Hughes, watching from the stands. Next week, Tulane takes on LSU in the Battle of the Rag for the first time since 2009.
USF vs. Boise State: USF managed a thrilling 28-20 victory over Boise State, thanks to a fiery 28-point second quarter. The Bulls' defense held firm, with Jarvis Lee snagging a pick-six to ice the game. Quarterback Byrum Brown contributed with both arm and legs, leading the Bulls to their first win. USF will take a bye next week to prepare for their next challenge.
Texas State vs. Eastern Michigan: Texas State’s battle against Eastern Michigan ended in a 29-21 defeat. Sophomore QB PJ Hatter threw for 93 yards and a touchdown but had two picks. Running back Torrance Burgess Jr. was a bright spot, rushing for 129 yards and a score. Texas State will look to bounce back in the I-35 showdown against UTSA next week.
Troy vs. FCS Northwest: Troy, Troy, Troy… where do we even begin? The Trojans managed to pull off the unthinkable: they paid FCS Northwest a cool $750,000 to waltz into their house and beat them senseless, 55-35. That's right, folks — an FCS team strolled into Troy’s own backyard and embarrassed them in front of their own fans. And who do we have to thank for this train wreck? None other than Coach Khail, whose qualifications for this job are now as questionable as his game plan.
Coach Khail’s crew looked like they were playing with their eyes closed, and when they weren't tripping over themselves, they were busy racking up penalties left and right. The Trojans were outplayed, outclassed, and outsmarted at every turn. Forget winning — the only thing Troy managed to do better was commit more penalties than their opponents. The real question now: will Coach Khail even make it to the dressing room after this debacle, or is the writing already on the wall for his swift exit?
One has to wonder what was going through the heads of Troy's athletic department when they handed over a small fortune to bring in FCS Northwest, only to get steamrolled by 20 points at home. Maybe they thought they were buying an easy win. Instead, they bought themselves a headline-making disaster that’ll haunt them for years to come.
Stay tuned, folks, because this season looks like it's going to be one long, painful ride for Troy — and Coach Khail better start packing his bags.
Stay tuned, folks, as the college football season is just getting started, and there's sure to be plenty more action in the weeks ahead!
